Understanding what the soul, spirit, and breath of life truly are — and what happens at death — has profound implications for how you live, how you treat your body, and how urgently you seek to have your character transformed now.
Many Christians have inherited the Greek idea that the soul is an immortal, indestructible entity that floats away to heaven at death. But Scripture teaches that the soul is the living person — and that life depends entirely on God's continuous gift of breath and spirit. At death, the person is unconscious, awaiting the resurrection.
"The living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing." — Ecclesiastes 9:5
Since the character is sealed at death and cannot be changed in the grave, the work of character transformation must happen now — in this life. There is no purgatory, no second chance after death. The Holy Spirit works with willing hearts today to build the character that will be ready for heaven.
"Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the realm of the dead, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom." — Ecclesiastes 9:10
The resurrection is not a metaphor — it is a real, bodily, glorious event. God holds the complete "information" of every person who has died in faith. At the last trump, He will call them forth with new spiritual bodies, free from sin and death forever. This is the great hope of the Christian.
"For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a shout… and the dead in Christ will rise first." — 1 Thessalonians 4:16
